While in Taiwan, I used to run laps of DaAn forest park, or run from the botton of YanMin San to the bufferfly road (BaLaKa Rd.), beginning with running to Taipei train station and taking 260 to the bus stop SanTzIan. The former is really boring, but easily accessible to me. I like the latter because it's uphill all the way, a challeneg to my mind and physical. It has better view, but sometimes dangerous because the road was not wide enough and lots of bus passed by without any respect..

On weekends, I used to explore some area by running, (trying to reduce the air polution I might introduce), such as Taipei City Zoo to SFanLiao run, which I posted before.

In each vacation, I would plan some runs outside Taipei area when my family went to visit other counties.

It's great to knowing all you runners because we can share our experience and enthusiasm. And I can try more courses and expand my footsteps. I have a few running challenges to run when I came back this year. Maybe some of you can join me and that'll be fun.

Like most students in Taiwan, I was more concentrating on my course work. The "greatest" run I can remember is 30 laps on 400m track in NTU, which took me almost an hour. Then I could not walk a bit when I hiked w ith my friend in YangMin San next day. Other than that, I don't think I actually did any running except a few forced 3000m runs in military service.

After I came to US for graduate study, I started to run a little, maybe 4K once a week. Fresh air, more runners, lots of trails, I think all of these allured me to go out for a run.

When I started to work here, I began to run seriously. This is probably due to lots of pressure from my work. I also felt that I was not as fit or strong as before. Since my company had a very good gym, so I explored the trails around my company by running. Day by day, I ran longer, felt better and stronger, and met many runners. I started with the capability to run only 15 min. I went for my first 1/2 marathon after a year and first marathon after 3 years. I have witness the improvement on myself from running. I believe these accomplishments have happened to you all.

I found there were so many running race every weekend. My Japanese friend, who is also a runner, told me that Japan, which is much smaller in size, has more running races than US. he said there was a Japanese runner who once run 100 marathons in one year. This is pretty amazing and unbelievale - twice every week, one on Saturday and the other on the next day. On the same magazine, I also read that there was a Japanese runner who completed over 4800km running across America. No wonder why the Japan female runner won the 2000 Olympic marathon.

I think this is the same in Korean, though I don't have much information about it. This gave me some ideas why the Korean runner won the 2001 Boston marathon by beating all other Kenyan and Ethopian runners, eliminating their many year winnning streak.

So in many international races held in US, we can easily find out Japanese and Korean names in the top places.

I am happy to know that there are more endurance races in Taiwan and many are (ultra-)marathons and triathlons.
