It was almost exactly two years ago today that Intel released the Pentium 4 running at 1.4 and 1.5 GHz--to a less-than enthusiastic reception. Despite Santa Clara’s claims to the contrary, early benchmarks of the processor portrayed it as an ineffective also-ran, losing benchmarks repeatedly not only against AMD’s Athlon, but most embarrassingly, against the older, “inferior”, Pentium III itself.
