It was almost exactly two years ago today that Intel released the Pentium 4 running at 1.4 and 1.5 GHz--to a less-than enthusiastic reception. Despite Santa Clara’s claims to the contrary, early benchmarks of the processor portrayed it as an ineffective also-ran, losing benchmarks repeatedly not only against AMD’s Athlon, but most embarrassingly, against the older, “inferior”, Pentium III itself. The CPU ran only on the much-disliked (and expensive) RDRAM platform, had noted efficiency problems, and required specialized programming instructions in order to excel—all points which counted heavily against it when it first saw the light of day.
